Gianna Beretta Molla was born in 1922 in Italy. In 1950 she opened her clinic, focusing on the care of mothers, babies, elderly and the poor. She hoped to one day go with her brother, to be a missionary doctor in Brazil, but her poor health made that impossible. She met her husband Pietro, and was married in 1955. Later, when she was pregnant with her fourth child, doctors discovered a fibroma (a tumour) in her uterus. She was faced with a difficult decision; she chose to sacrifice her health and well-being for the sake of the baby she was carrying. The surgery to remove the fibroma was successful, however it led to further difficulties with Gianna’s health. After the baby was born, Gianna passed away from complications with the pregnancy.
Gianna Emanuela Molla, St. Gianna’s daughter, is now a fully trained doctor specializing in care of the elderly.
